Overview
British nurse Tracy Hogg, writing with Melinda Blau, became known as the Baby Whisperer for her focus on reading babies' cues. Her E.A.S.Y. routine (Eat, Activity, Sleep, You-time) gives the day a predictable order without strict clock times. For babies under about 4 months, she uses shush-pat to calm them in the crib.
From about 4 months, Pick-Up/Put-Down means picking baby up when they cry and putting them down as soon as they calm, repeating until they sleep. A dream feed helps extend the night. Hogg died in 2004, so the books haven't been updated since.
How it works
- E.A.S.Y.: Eat, Activity, Sleep, You-time.
- Learn baby's cues and cries.
- Under ~4 mo: shush-pat until calm.
- ~4 mo+: pick up when crying, put down as soon as calm, repeat until asleep.
- Dream feed to extend the night.
Pros
- Structured but flexible
- Parent stays present
- Teaches cue-reading
Cons
- PU/PD can take many repetitions and be physically exhausting
- Can overstimulate some babies
- No updates since 2004
Evidence
Weak. Expert opinion; not trialed.
